We are so excited to introduce our new Fall 2018 Collection of dresses, available in stores now! The collection features a range of unique, fashion-forward dresses that you can’t find anywhere else.
We thought you might like a behind-the-scenes look at exactly what makes our creations so special, so we asked our talented designers for their insights on how they approach their craft.
Founder, Hyun Jung Kim, and designer, Lindsay Cook, have been with Decode 1.8 since the beginning, and their creative talents are largely responsible for the enthusiastic reception we receive from our customers. They were kind enough to take time away from putting the last-minute touches on their creations to give you the inside scoop on the Decode 1.8 Fall Collection.
Q: Before we get into specifics on the new line, tell us: How did you become interested in designing?
Lindsay: I was an AP art student in high school, but also worked at a clothing store in the mall and really got into fashion. So, I combined the two when I majored in college.
Kim: I was always interested in drawing figures, and that lead me into majoring in fashion design.
Q: What inspires you when you’re designing?
Lindsay: Everyday people, runway shows, the women who surround me in my everyday life.
Kim: I totally agree with Lindsay on this, especially everyday women.
Q: What led you to Decode 1.8?
Lindsay: I was Kim’s design assistant at another dress company. When she opened Decode 1.8, it was a no-brainer to join her team.
Kim: I wanted to produce well-made, beautiful pieces at affordable prices for everyday women. When I finally decided to launch a new line, I had a small but great and supportive team that shared the same vision. Lindsay was one of them.
Q: What details of your Fall designs would you like to highlight?
Lindsay: Our fabrications. We have a range of novelty fabrics that have an assortment of laces, embroideries, soutache, 3D embroidery, and prints.
Kim: An easy and comfortable fit, as well as Lindsay’s comment above.
Q: Is there a particular Fall Collection piece that’s your favorite?
Lindsay: The #184720 in navy is my favorite piece. I think this is a great example of how someone of any age and any body type could wear this gown. It has a great neckline, pleats at the waist, a mermaid shape, and stretch fabric, and it has a novelty aesthetic to it. But, it’s also timeless.
Kim: The #184765 black cocktail dress with the lace flounce. It is a piece for everybody, including various ages and occasions.
Q: How do you take women without “perfect figures” into account when you design clothing?
Lindsay: Seventy-five percent of our fabrications have stretch-ability. This allows women with curves, short torsos, long torsos, bigger busts, smaller busts, hips, etc., to feel more comfortable and not have to worry too much about alterations.
Q: What advice would you give to women when they shop for clothes?
Lindsay: Go for quality, not quantity. Also, shop more “forever” pieces, augmented by only a few trendy pieces.
Kim: Go for quality and great fit.
